MEDICAL and ERRAND TRANSPORTION DRIVERS: Drive consumers over the age of 60 to a variety of errands. Being able to go to medical appointments, grocery shopping, and other tasks are vital to maintaining independence. Volunteer drivers not only provide a means of getting there, but also provide companionship. Choose your assignment and use your own automobile with the option for mileage reimbursement.
OPERATION REACH OUT: Using a provided list, call local Meals on Wheels clients on a Tuesday and/or Thursday morning—days when meals are not delivered—to check on them and engage them in friendly conversation. Calls would last no more than four hours. Choose your availability. Call from own home or agency office.
Hospice of Central PA is looking for some kind-hearted souls to reach out to hospice patients in need. All positions and trainings are located in Schuylkill County. Contact Maureen Griffin Hoepfer at 717 732-1000.
VET TO VET PROGRAM: Spend time, chat, play games, share companionship, or provide a valuable listening ear attuned to the special experience that only another Vet can relate to. Volunteer must be a Veteran.
FAMILY SUPPORT VOLUNTEERS: Provide comfort and companionship to the patient and support and respite care to their family. NURSING HOME VISITORS: Give some nursing home hospice patients the gift of extra attention.
American Cancer Society clients too often find that their greatest challenge is a lack of transportation. The Road to Recovery program provides free transportation to those who are unable to drive themselves to and from treatment. Drivers are needed now. TIME: Flexible, choose assignment. SKILLS: Valid driver’s license, good driving record, reliable vehicle, background checks, and online orientation required. Use own or agency vehicle. LOCATION: In and out of county. APPRISE Program is in need of volunteers to help our seniors by answering a statewide hotline on Medicare questions. Volunteers work in pairs and receive training and support. TIME: 9 AM to 12:30 PM or from 12:30 PM to 4 PM on Wednesdays and/or Thursdays.CONTACT: Sue at 570 624-3026.
The Ombudsman Program is in need of volunteers for Golden Years Adult Day Care in Shenandoah, Evergreen and Providence Place Adult Day Cares in Pine Grove, Eldergarden Adult Day Care and Greenwood Hills Personal Care Home in Pottsville, and Heritage Mills Personal Care in Tower City to visit the facility monthly to welcome new residents and distribute materials including residents’ rights.
