A Hole in One Winner in the final round can win a forty year $1,000,000 annuity! Proceeds from the Shootout will be used to fund various community-based programs of the Council, the most well-known being the Thanksgiving Meal Project.

“Go native” May 18-19 at Hawk Mountain plant sale

Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, Kempton, will host its annual Native Plant Sale Saturday and Sunday, May 18 and May 19 from 10 am to 4 pm at the Visitor Center. The event, which has a strong educational focus, routinely attracts gardeners seeking to attract more birds and butterflies to their home landscapes, and to reduce maintenance. For sale will be a diverse selection of native wildflowers, vines, grasses, ferns, shrubs, and trees, in addition to free literature on planting with native species and advice from knowledgeable volunteers.

The term “native plant” refers to a species that occurred naturally in a region before colonists arrived. Non-native plants or “exotics” are species introduced from other countries or regions. Over the past 200 years, several thousand exotic plant and animal species have become established in the United States, and about one in seven has become invasive.

Many exotics leave their natural predators at home and also become invasive, spreading so vigorously that they displace native plants and the beneficial insects and wildlife that depend upon them to survival. Some invasive plants push rare and not-so-rare species to the brink of extinction.

“At Hawk Mountain and in other natural areas, maintaining native species is a major challenge. The Native Plant Sale helps us to teach people about the importance of natives to wildlife, and to help our visitors create native landscapes at home,” says Ryan Beltz, a Sanctuary caretaker who oversees the sale.

Interest in native plant gardening continues to grow, and seasoned and novice gardeners are turning to natives for their low maintenance and durability, as well as their beauty, variety and color. To help with plant selection, the Hawk Mountain Native Plant Sale will clearly mark all plants into categories and show what plants will thrive in specific conditions. For example, some groups of plants will be labeled “sunny and dry” while others will be marked for “shady and wet” areas.

Beltz also explains that native plants are adapted to local growing conditions, and so come equipped with built-in defenses to common insects and disease. And, since many natives are perennial and return every year, it’s easy for first-time gardeners to create a low-maintenance, low-cost and pesticide free garden that attracts more butterflies and birds.

On both days the Sanctuary also will host live raptor programs at 11 and 2 pm, offer free information on native plant gardening, and experts will be on hand to answer questions. For those who wish to visit scenic overlooks, trail fees cost $6 adults, $5 senior and $3 for children ages 6 to 12. Members are always admitted free, and memberships can be purchased at the Visitor Center or online at www.hawkmountain.org.

The 2,500-acre Hawk Mountain Sanctuary is the world’s first refuge for birds of prey and an international center for raptor conservation. The Sanctuary’s Visitor Center and eight-mile trail system with scenic overlooks are open to the public year-round. For more information, call 610-756-6961.

Fused Glass Workshop

Glass artist Amy Weidensaul will teach some of the basic techniques of fused glass to students in this two hour class. Participants will have the change to put their new skills and imaginations to use on their own fused glass project, creating 3-4 pendants to take home!

Schuylkill Rehabilitation Center would like to invite you to a free community in-service entitled,

“Making Fitness Fun” on Tuesday, June 18, 2013 at 6:00 p.m.

The Certified Athletic Trainers will discuss how their Professional Fitness Training program can be customized for adults, children and/or sport-specific training utilizing techniques that are easy to perform, cost-effective, and appropriate for all ages.

If you are interested in specific sports fitness preparation or want to learn more about the importance of physical activity, healthy eating habits, and ways to make these new life changes enjoyable while achieving your personal fitness goals, please join them at Schuylkill Rehabilitation Center’s Education Room. Fish for free at Sweet Arrow Lake County Park

Introduction to Canoeing and Kayaking @ Sweet Arrow Lake County Park

May 27 from 2:00 PM.

Meet at the Canoe Launch near the Clubhouse.

Ever want to try canoeing or kayaking? This program will introduce you to the basics of boating safety, paddling and control.

Preregistration is required. Number of participants will be limited. Suitable for teens and adults.

Canoe and Kayak Rental Concession opens at the Canoe Launch near the Clubhouse on May 27.

Canoes, Kayaks and pedal boats: $10.00/hour, $17.00 for two hours, $40.00 for 4 hours.

Saturday, Sunday, Memorial Day Monday, July 4th and Labor Day Monday Only. Watercraft available on a first come first serve basis but may be reserved by calling 570-527-2505.

Times are 10:30 AM – 7:00 PM. Other times and days may be available by appointment.

Last rental is at 6:00 PM. All boats must be returned by 7:00 PM.

Rentals will be made if weather and lake conditions permit and staff is available.

Fish for free at Sweet Arrow Lake County Park

Memorial Day (May 27) and Independence Day, July 4.

Some things in life are free. The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission allow anyone, resident or non-resident to fish without a fishing license. It is the perfect way to reacquaint you to the sport or introduce someone young or old to a lifetime of the sport of fishing.

Fish-for-free days are held twice a year and apply to all waters of the Commonwealth. All other fishing regulations still apply.

Schuylkill County Fair Premium Book is Available

Fair books will be arriving at your door step shortly according to Kathy Evanchalk of the Schuylkill County Fair. Kathy is busy labeling and sorting the fair books for mailing. If you exhibited in last year at the fair then you will be receiving a fair book. The book is fresh off the presses, white cover with blue printing. The cover features the Schuylkill County Fair Logo. This represents the Schuylkill County Fair the best for we are celebrating our 30^th year as a fair.

The color was chosen to represent “Harvest Your Dreams” which is this year’s theme for the fair. A harvest orange is the color for the fair flyers. Check out all the new exhibits, activities, contests and entertainment lined up for this year fair in the flyers.

Flyers are placed in business establishments though out the county. So pick up your fair book or flyer locally and come to the Schuylkill County Fair July 29 through August 3 and “Harvest Your Dreams”.

The Friedensburg Fire Company block party is set for Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the company grounds. Friday’s activities will include a mock lobster dinner from 4 to 7 p.m. with food stands opening at 6 p.m. Reckless will provide entertainment beginning at 7 p.m. There will be hose and barrel competition beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday. Food stands will open at 6 p.m. Saturday and Sapphire will entertain beginning at 7 p.m. Sunday’s highlights will include line dancing Chicken Nugget from 4 to 9 p.m. Food stands will open at 4 p.m. and a $10,000 cash drawing winner will be pulled at 8 p.m. Everyone is welcome.
